Bangkok Travel Guide: Things to Do in Bangkok

Bangkok Travel Guide

For a first time tourist, getting to know Bangkok can resemble trying to navigate through a labyrinth. While certainly exciting, it can also be quite a confusing and chaotic experience. Huge crowds everywhere can make your head dizzy. Everything seems to come into a mix – countless overpasses, old historical buildings on the backdrop of the modern architecture and numerous street cart vendors selling essentially anything amidst the rush hour crowd. It seems like the Skytrain also adds a bit of a confusion to the mix. But once you get to know Bangkok, you will discover the real appeal of the Thailand’s capital. Check out this Bangkok Travel Guide and find out the best ways to enjoy the city.

About Bangkok

Although millions of tourists visit Bangkok each year, it is still possible to find unique and interesting places that are hidden away from the big crowds, examine the Buddhist legacy of the historic temples and even enjoy the modern amenities of the metro centers. You can pretty much experience everything Thailand has to offer right here in Bangkok, apart from the magnificent beaches and the beautiful scenery of the mountains and waterfalls. Bangkok offers a sample of anything that you’ve probably heard and read about Thailand, that is why many travelers choose to start their vacation here.

Things to visit

The most popular area in Bangkok is Ko Rattanakosin, short name is Ko Island. This street is essentially the remains of the old center of the city. It flanks the eastern bank of Chao Phraya River. So what is it that attracts the tourists to this area? Some of the best monuments of the cultural heritage of Thailand you can find here, such as the Grand Palace, Wat Arun (the Temple of the Dawn), the historic temple of Wat Mahathat and many other ancient temples and shrines. That’s all will provide a great source of awe and inspiration not only for the Buddhist visitors, but also for everyone else. The highlight of Thailand’s architectural accomplishments is truly showcased in Ko Rattanakosin.

Another interesting fact about Bangkok is that it boasts the nickname of “The Venice of the East”. This refers to the very unique way to explore Bangkok by a boat by navigating the local canal system.

Sightseeings

If, on the other hand, sightseeing is what you are mainly after, definitely spend some time in the Dusit District of Bangkok. Some of the places of interest that are represented there include Vimanmek Mansion – the largest teakwood structure in the world and a true architectural heritage from the beginning of the 20th century, Wat Benchamabophit – an amazing Buddhist temple, the first museum in ThailandSuan Pakkard Palace, and the famous Dusit Zoo.

For backpakers

For the backpackers in Thailand, I would suggest to visit the Thewet and Banglampoo districts. Local markets there offer some of the most exciting souvenir shopping experience. Although the neighborhoods may seem a little drab and boring during the daytime, everything comes to life after dark.

Shopping

As for the shopping possibilities in Bangkok – they are truly endless. You can hop on the Skytrain and head over to northern Bangkok, the home of the Chatuchak Weekend Market and the district’s largest shopping center. Then you can head over to the Pathumwan district and the famous Siam Square – a real shopping galore. Besides shopping and Siam Center, there is also the Siam Discovery Center, Trade Center, Centerpoint and the Panthip Plaza. Bangkok’s Chinatown also offers some exciting shopping possibilities, so does the Indian district of Pahurat.
