When we think about Thailand as a travel destination, some of the things that usually come to mind are the country’s capital Bangkok, the gorgeous beaches of Phuket and internationally renowned resorts of Pattaya City. Geographically, Isan is located in the Northeast of Thailand, and it is the country’s largest region. Places to visit in Isaan?

The legacy of the ancient Khmer Kingdom can still be observed in the historic ruins found in Isan, such as Phanom Rung, Muang Tam, and Pimai. The South East Asia history enthusiasts would also enjoy the visit to the province of Udon Thani, the home of the Ban Chiang archeological site. Some recently found archeological evidence suggests that this area once thrived in the Jurassic era many millions of years ago. Many of the ancient historical artifacts and exhibits can be seen at the visitor center that opened about ten years go – it is a great place to just look around.

Backpacking, camping and hiking enthusiasts would love a visit to the Phu Kradueng National park in Loei Province. The mountain ranges there provide some spectacular views. The park has been consistently attracting thousands of tourists in the recent years.

Another place worth mentioning is Korat or Nakorn Ratchasima. This place has managed to preserve the real authentic flavor of Thailand. A few places of interest that are worth checking out here are the Korat Zoo, Tao Surantee Monument, Royal Thai Air Force base and the Dan Kwian and Pak Thing Chai villages.
